"And the one who spoke with me had a gold measuring rod to measure the city, and its gates and its wall" (Revelation 21:15).

John had already measured the temple of God in Revelation chapter eleven, but his measurements were incomplete because he was to leave out the outer court. Now they were to measure the completed city of God (that's who we are). Notice how their measuring rod had changed from a grassy reed to golden measuring rod. When John first measured the church with an earthly reed, it represented the incomplete nature of the church. But the golden measuring rod, on the other hand, speaks prophetically about the pure nature of God that we are becoming. Thus, they were to measure the completed city of God with a golden measuring rod. We must understand that the entire book of Revelation is written in a prophetic language that we must learn to interpret, using other parts of the Bible, if we are to understand this most important book.

"And the material of the wall was jasper; and the city was pure gold, like clear glass" (Revelation 21:18).

"Come here, I shall show you the bride, the wife of the Lamb. And he carried me away in the Spirit to a great and high mountain, and showed me the holy city, Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, having the glory of God. Her brilliance was like a very costly stone, as a stone of crystal-clear jasper" (Revelation 21:9-11).

The walls of the city are made of jasper that we are to be like one day, because Jesus, our Head, is covered with the same likeness of jasper. "Immediately I was in the Spirit; and behold, a throne was standing in heaven, and One sitting on the throne. And He who was sitting was like a jasper stone and a sardius in appearance; and there was a rainbow around the throne, like an emerald in appearance" (Revelation 4:3). Our high calling is to be like Him! When we, the city of God, are completed and measured, we will have come into the complete likeness of Jesus. Then we will have become like pure transparent gold and jasper because we will have come into the full likeness of Jesus. Pure! "Until we all reach unity in the faith and in the knowledge of the Son of God and become mature, attaining to the whole measure of the fullness of Christ" (Ephesians 4:13 NIV).

It is interesting that scientists do not even know what jasper looks like. I think that God has hidden jaspers real identity, just as He has hidden the true identity of Christ and His body. But when we have become complete in Him, we will have become like crystal-clear jasper and gold. He will be seen through us! WOW! Remember that when gold has become completely refined, it has no color in it at all. It is as clear glass. This is why we must go through our testing fires over and over to be refined of all the impurities of the flesh. For we never fail God's tests, we just keep taking them over until we pass!

And the street of the city was pure gold, like transparent glass" (Revelation 21:21).

For some time I had been seeking the Lord about what the street of gold represents in scripture. Then one day the Holy Spirit said to me, "When you're walking in truth, you are walking in the nature of God, which is the street of gold!" The Bible only uses this term, "street of gold" one time. It does not say, "streets of gold," but one street! Know for sure my friend, that there is only one way to the Father, which is the person of Jesus Christ, who is fully man and fully God on the throne! He will lead us to the throne because He is the Way, the Truth, and the Life of God the Father. He is the only way to the fullness of life in the Father. And as we are walking in the Truth of God (Jesus), we are now able to walk on the street of gold here earth on because He is the true nature of God that we are walking in and on! It is one thing for us to know the truth, but it is quite another for us to be walking on the truth!

The church has sung and preached about the "streets" of gold for years, but rarely are they ever walking on the truth of God. They say that the street is real and that we are able to walk on it in heaven when we die. But is the street really a physical one, or is the Bible prophetically speaking about something that is far greater than what they can spiritually comprehend, as is the rest of the book of Revelation? I believe the later to true. The things of the spirit world are always far greater than any natural thing we can comprehend, because the natural world is only a type or shadow of what the eternal things of the spirit world really are like. Take, for example, the twelve pearly gates of the New Jerusalem.

"And the twelve gates were twelve pearls; each one of the gates was a single pearl. .." (Revelation 21:21).

Huge pearls are the gateways to the city of God. I know that tradition has taught us that these are natural pearls. But I ask you, what are pearls in the natural? They are small stones caused by irritants that have become beautiful gemstones in the oyster's mouth. It has overcome these grains of sand and turned them into precious stones by having to deal with them on a daily basis! Our daily tribulations that we overcome will be the pearly gates to the city of God for us! We must not run from our tribulations any longer, but instead embrace them so that they will become the pearly gates to the kingdom of God for us. Paul said in Acts 14:22, "Through many tribulations we must enter the kingdom of God." The only way for us to enter the fullness of the God is to go through the tribulations that He allows in our life and even thank Him for them! There is no other way for us to enter into the fullness of the kingdom of God.

There is a beach in California called, "Pebble Beach" because the ruff surf there continually rolls small stones back and forth on the beach. They are tossed and rolled and rubbed together and ground against the sharp cliffs. Day and night the ceaseless motion goes on never resting. And what are the results? People from around the world come there to gather the round and beautiful stones. They then are set up in cabinets; they are ornaments in people's homes. Don't you see? We as pearls are being polished through our tribulations! "He made me into a polished arrow…" (Isaiah 49:2 NKJV).

I had a vision a few years ago of a sculptured head being finished; it was just having the finishing touches being done. The tools that were used on it were a small chisel and sandpaper to polish the work. And this is what God does to us in our times of difficulty, for nothing is ever wasted with God!

The number twelve in scripture speaks of God's government and the people who are going to rule and reign with Him. The tribulations allowed in our life prepare us for this high calling! Paul said, "If we suffer, we shall also reign with him: if we deny him (in suffering), he also will deny us (of reigning with Him)" (2 Timothy 2:12 KJV). We must no longer deny Him of His right to rule and reign in us through suffering, so that we can sit on His throne with Him later! He is now paying us rich dividends with the truths of His word. Every truth that we receive from Him is another nugget of gold He is giving us to pave our street of gold, until we are walking in His full character, gold/truth!
