THE TWELVE FOUNDATIONS
OF THE NEW JERUSALEM
By Dan Luehrs
And the wall of the city had twelve foundation stones, and on them were the twelve names of the twelve apostles of the Lamb. Rev 21:14 (NAS)
I have studied a lot about the book of Revelation and had never heard of anyone giving attention to the twelve foundations of the New Jerusalem. I have read about the twelve levels, but nothing on the foundations. Ephesians 2:20 says that we, "Having been built upon the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Christ Jesus Himself being the cornerstone." What this means is that the apostles were given foundational truth which is in Christ Jesus, this is the very groundwork that our lives must be built on, but we must go higher than just the foundation. Can you imagine a builder saying he is finished with the building when there is only a foundation?
All the books of the Bible are anointed and ordained of God as the Holy Spirit lead the writers, their words are the revelation from the Fatherís heart. The New Testament writerís words are truth from God because they are the foundation of true spiritual reality that was imprinted in them for three and a half years when they walked with Jesus. Jesus is the word of God, meaning He is the communication from the Father to the apostles and the prophets in the Bible. And now because the Holy Spirit [the Spirit of truth] fills all true believers and has been given to us to bestow revelation from the heart of God.
The Lord began to speak this message to me when He woke me up with this vision.
I was on the flood pad of a large dam enjoying my walk in ankle deep water that was coming from the dam. I looked up at the massive dam and the floodgates where right above my head and I heard the Lord say "You will not make it in what is about to come if you are not grounded upon the twelve foundations."
In 1995 I also had several visions of a dam that was breaking, it was made of rock. My last vision of it was when revival broke out in our church and the dam had a small stream flowing over the broken down rocks. I believe what God is showing me is that the church is only walking in ankle deed water right now! The power [water of the Holy Spirit] is about to blow out the dam that man has made out of religion! The dam is about to break and how will we stand if we are not built precisely upon the twelve foundations of truth? The word is our plumb line of truth that we are called to live accordingly to if we plan to build accurately.
I believe the twelve foundations are to be experiential truth in our life. For these truths to be the authentic foundation in us they cannot be just dogma that we put into our heads from our much learning. Truth [Jesus] must be experienced, like in salvation or the baptism of the Holy Spirit that we may know Him, to live and breathe the reality of Him on a daily basis. Experiencing truth must be our life! These are the twelve foundations that the Lord has given me to build upward in Christ likeness in our life.
I could easily expand each one of these but that is not my purpose here. My purpose is to get the word and vision for these truths in your heart and for you to experience them. Love is not the last foundation but the first level that all the others are built upon. For all is built upon love because that is what God is. When we get to heaven God will not ask us how many people we got saved, but did we learn to love.
If you are not praying the prayers of Paul for yourself and your loved ones, please begin now, for it is never to late with God. Cry out to God for wisdom so that you also maybe prepared for the day of the Lord that is soon to break forth upon us in great darkness and power. If we are prepared for that day, God will pour through us like a river that will wash away all of satanís lies from Godís people. Then after the church is cleansed we will cleanse the whole world from its evil ways into the liberty of Jesus Christ.
Paulís prayers are as follows.
That the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, may give to you a spirit of wisdom and of revelation in the knowledge of Him. I pray that the eyes of your heart may be enlightened, so that you may know what is the hope of His calling, what are the riches of the glory of His inheritance in the saints, and what is the surpassing greatness of His power toward us who believe. These are in accordance with the working of the strength of His might. Eph 1:17-19 (NAS)
For this reason also, since the day we heard of it, we have not ceased to pray for you and to ask that you may be filled with the knowledge of His will in all spiritual wisdom and understanding, so that you may walk in a manner worthy of the Lord, to please Him in all respects, bearing fruit in every good work and increasing in the knowledge of God; strengthened with all power, according to His glorious might, for the attaining of all steadfastness and patience; joyously giving thanks to the Father, who has qualified us to share in the inheritance of the saints in light. Col 1:9-13 [NAS]
So that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith; and that you, being rooted and grounded in love, may be able to comprehend with all the saints what is the breadth and length and height and depth, and to know the love of Christ which surpasses knowledge, that you may be filled up to all the fullness of God. Eph 3:17-19 (NAS)
Twelve is the number of government; we are being prepared by God to be a part of His ruling body, the church, the bride of Christ, and the sons of God. But in order for us to handle His power and authority we must have these foundational truths working in us, so that we can handle it without being washed away in the coming flood of power.
THE SEVEN SPIRITS OF GOD
John to the seven churches that are in Asia: Grace to you and peace, from Him who is and who was and who is to come; and from the seven Spirits who are before His throne. Rev 1:4 (NAS)
When the Bible speaks about the seven spirits of God it is not talking about seven Holy Spiritís, but the seven-fold work of the Spirit of God. Within the Holy Spirit are six attributes, which He is, and we must manifest them if we are to be built upon the twelve foundations correctly. These six attributes are His energy and effectiveness in the unseen world, which are the spirit of Wisdom, the spirit of Council, the spirit of Understanding, the spirit of Strength, the spirit of Knowledge, the spirit of Fear of God. (See Is 11:2). Just as there are nine fruits of the Holy Spirit they all spring forth out of one, [love] because that is what God is.
Revelation 1:4 states that the seven spirits of God are before the throne rather than on the throne. In order for them to be the foundation of the throne and our life they must be on the throne, meaning, that the throne of God is the realm where He dwells in power and authority. When I looked up the Greek words "Before the throne" I find that it could be rendered "On or In the throne" which would be more accurate according to what Revelation 3:1 says, "He who has the seven Spirits of GodÖ" Jesus possess the seven spirits of God within Himself and they are in His body! Revelation 5:6 says, "And I looked, and behold, in the midst of the throne and of the four living creatures, and in the midst of the elders, stood a Lamb as though it had been slain, having seven horns and seven eyes, which are the seven Spirits of God sent out into all the earth." Within the throne is all power and authority [in the Lamb]. The bride is represented in the throne as the four living creatures and the twenty four elders which are in Christ, as are the seven spirits of God which are sent out into all the earth through the church. Eph 1:22-23 says, "And He put all things in subjection under His feet, and gave Him as head over all things to the church, which is His body, the fullness of Him who fills all in all. Did you get that? We the church, His body is the fullness of Him in the earth, for the fullness of Him is the seven Spirits of God.
His intent was that now, through the church, the manifold wisdom of God should be made known to the rulers and authorities in the heavenly realms, according to his eternal purpose which he accomplished in Christ Jesus our Lord. Eph 3:10-11 (NIV)
Jesus is Lord of all, He alone holds all power, wisdom and authority, which the seven spirits represent, seven is the number of wholeness and completeness. And because He now dwells in us, this means that we also have the seven spirits of God dwelling in us. The problem with us is that we are flesh and are not consistently manifesting them, but manifest the flesh at times and not the Spirit of God. But this is about to change as God answers the prayers of Paul so that we are manifesting Godís Spirit at all times. Now is the time to ask and believe for them in your life!
Also she had a great and high wallÖ Rev 21:12 (NKJV)
When I first read that [she] we the city of God had a great high wall it brought questions to my mind. Why does the kingdom of God need a wall to protect us when we have God and the angels? Why do we want to keep people in or out? So I ask the Lord "What does the wall symbolize?" He said, "Salvation!" I knew this was right when I thought of a verse in Isaiah 60:18, "ÖBut you will call your walls salvation, and your gates praise." The walls are not to keep people out or in but to give them protection in His great salvation. The very name of Jesus means salvation, it means to be delivered, healed, prosperous, and to receive all of heavens goodness. Jesus is called the "Salvation of God." (See Luke 2:30).
The Bible says that the wall of the city is clear like glass for all to behold the goodness of our God in our midst. "And the material of the wall was jasper; and the city was pure gold, like clear glass." Rev 21:18 (NAS) We have nothing to hide, but only to give away to those who will come and receive freely and drink from the river of life that is flowing through us from the throne of God.
The word [wall] is used six times in just a few verses. This tells me that the wall has great significance and we must understand its meaning if we are to build higher so that all nations will come in to it and eat from the bounty of the Lord. Jesus is the wall, the salvation of the city within His overcoming people. Revelation 21:18 says that the wall is made of jasper stone, this is the very stone that Jesus is liken to Who is seated on the throne in chapter 4:3, the bride is liken to the same when she descends out of heaven in 21:11. The Wall and the bride are constructed out of the same materials because they both represent the SALVATION of our God. Hallelujah! This good news should give us purpose, strength, and give meaning to live life to the fullest through all our trails and tribulations with thanksgiving. We are being made into the same precious gem as Jesus is, for the entire world to see Him through us.
We are the wall of the city, which is the great temple that God is building out of living stones! "And coming to Him as to a living stone, rejected by men, but choice and precious in the sight of God, you also, as living stones, are being built up as a spiritual house for a holy priesthood, to offer up spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ." 1 Peter 2:4-6 (NAS). We are the salvation of God because we are the body of Jesus. For years I have wondered why we are likened to stones, because they have been here from the beginning and will be here forever as will the temple of our God be.
One year we went on a missionís trip to Peru and friend of ours asked if we were going to go to Machu Picchu. I said, "What is that?" When they told me that it was a 5000-year-old lost Inca City and was one of the wonders of the world I wanted to go and see it for myself. Little did I know that God would use it in my life to teach me about the city of God! Machu Picchu is a city that was carved out of a mountain using each stone to build up the walls of the city and must have taken many years to construct. After all these years it is still standing strong for us to see it and be amazed. If the city would have been built out anything else it would not be here today and we would not be amazed that it is still standing and will be for many years to come.
Now if you can imagine for a moment the city of God that John likened us to, built out of precious stones that shines with the glory of God for all eternity. That is what our future looks like for you and me my friend. We are the shining city of God that is set on a hill for all to see and come home to! What a purpose and destiny we have in God!
So then you are no longer strangers and aliens, but you are fellow citizens with the saints, and are of God's household, having been built upon the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Christ Jesus Himself being the corner stone, in whom the whole building, being fitted together is growing into a holy temple in the Lord; in whom you also are being built together into a dwelling of God in the Spirit.
Eph 2:19-22 (NAS)
We individually are a temple, but we are only one stone that is being put together with others by the Father to become one great temple that the world will one day see and come streaming into it to receive the life giving power and forgiveness of God. Jesus said in Revelation 2:17, "I will give him a white stone, and a new name written on the stone which no one knows but he who receives it." Why do you think that we should get a stone? To put it around our necks and show it off to others? No! God has put all the names of the tribes of Israel and to memorialize their service to Him in this city forever an ever. Not only that, but all the faithful overcomers will also be memorialized with their new name upon each stone in the city of our God. All our toil, labor, and suffering in Christ will not go in vain, but will prepare us as living stones to fit in the right place that He has prepared for us in His great temple to be displayed to the entire universe forever.
According to the grace of God, which was given to me, as a wise master builder I laid a foundation, and another is building upon it. But let each man be careful how he builds upon it. For no man can lay a foundation other than the one which is laid, which is Jesus Christ. Now if any man builds upon the foundation with gold, silver, precious stones, wood, hay, straw, each man's work will become evident; for the day will show it, because it is to be revealed with fire; and the fire itself will test the quality of each man's work. If any man's work which he has built upon it remains, he shall receive a reward. If any man's work is burned up, he shall suffer loss; but he himself shall be saved, yet so as through fire. 1 Cor 3:10-15 (NAS)
THE CONSTRUCTION MATERIALS
The construction of its wall was of jasper; and the city was pure gold, like clear glass. The foundations of the wall of the city were adorned with all kinds of precious stones... Rev 21:18-19 (NKJV)
The living stones that God is building out of, are not just some cheap field rock, but they are likened to the most precious and valuable jewels. God had Moses use the most priceless stones that were to be engraved with the names of all the tribes. "And you shall take two onyx stones and engrave on them the names of the sons of Israel, six of their names on the one stone, and the names of the remaining six on the other stone, according to their birth." Ex 28:9-10 (NAS). Then each stone was placed upon the High Priest shoulders to represent how he would carry them into the presence of God. Isaiah 9:6 says that Jesus has the government (Kingdom) upon His shoulders. Twelve is the number of government, we the church are called to carry the government (authority) of God to the nations.
In Exodus 28:17 God had Moses make a breast plate with twelve stones in it and the names of all the tribes would be engraved on each one of them, he would then carry them over his heart to intercede for them in Godís presence. These engraved stones represent the value and the worthiness of His people, God considers us as a priceless gems. Jewels are made through much fire and pressure and are very rare because they are not in abundance as are fieldstones. They are hardened through many trials and tribulations and can take the pressure and still be most beautiful and precious. "They shall be Mine," says the Lord of hosts, "On the day that I make them My jewels" Mal 3:17 (NKJV)
In Revelation 7, all the tribes of Israel are named because their names have meaning. All the overcomers throughout the ages are represented through the symbolic number of 144,000 that come through the gates into the city of God. We also are called to have a white stone, [meaning a stone clear as crystal] that has our new name engraved upon it. (See Rev. 2:17). In each one of us God is building the character of Jesus Christ in our spirit-man whether we know it or not. Either we are becoming more like Jesus or we are not. It all has to do with the building materials we are using, such as the religious and worldly system, which are wood, hay, and straw. These building materials are not long lasting, but will burn up under the fires that life brings our way. But if we build our lives with the Spirit of truth we will be building with gold, silver, precious stones, which are only purified by fire. "Now if any man builds upon the foundation with gold, silver, precious stones, wood, hay, straw" (1 Corinthians 3:12 NAS). Notice that it says "If any man builds." We are the "any man" that is NOW building their life upon something that is lasting or something that will burn up in our trials. We must thank God for our trials by fire because they are causing us to become more like Him! "Each man's work will become evident; for the day will show it, because it is to be revealed with fire; and the fire itself will test the quality of each man's work. If any man's work, which he has built upon remains, he shall receive a reward. If any man's work is burned up, he shall suffer loss; but he himself shall be saved, yet so as through fire. Do you not know that you are a temple of God, and that the Spirit of God dwells in you? If any man destroys the temple of God, God will destroy him, for the temple of God is holy, and that is what you are" (1 Corinthians 3:13-17 NAS).
We must understand that WE are NOW building God's temple within our self by what we are partaking of and by how we are living it out each day in the fires of life. A person is what they eat in the natural and what they partake of in the spirit realm. If we are partaking of the things of God and are experiencing His presence, which is present truth, we are building correctly upon the foundation. However, when some Christians begin to suffer and go through fires, they often stop going forward when the building process begins in their lives, not realizing that these fires are now proving the quality of their work and showing what their life is built upon. We must ask our self, is the truth of God really in our heart, or is it just in our head? "Each man's work will become evident; for the day will show it, because it is to be revealed with fire." The day of testing is "The day" that Paul is writing about and not the day we die. We must realize that when we pass the test by going through the fire, God will "REWARD" us with a greater revelation of Jesus in our heart. When we see His glory we will be transformed into His very likeness. There is no greater reward in life than to have the revelation of Jesus Christ within our heart and then one-day unveil Him to a hurting world.
COMING IN THE CITY THROUGH THE PEARL
"And the twelve gates were twelve pearls; each one of the gates was a single pearl..." (Revelation 21:21).
It is through the gates of suffering and tribulation that we enter into the kingdom. Huge pearls are the gateway into the city of God. I know that tradition has taught us that these are natural pearls. But I ask you, "What are pearls in the natural?" They are small stones that caused an irritant and have become beautiful gemstones in the oyster's mouth. It has overcome these grains of sand and has turned them into precious stones by having to deal with them on a daily basis! Our daily tribulations (stones) that we have overcome will be the pearly gates that will lead us into the city of God! We must not run from our trials any longer, but instead we must embrace them so they will become the pearly gates to the kingdom of God for us. Paul said in Acts 14:22, "Through many tribulations we must enter the kingdom of God." The only way for us to enter into the fullness of the God is for us to go through great tribulations that He allows in our life. And we must thank Him for them! Because there is no other way for us to enter into the fullness of the God but through the doorway of tribulation that God has allowed in our life.
As the Lord began to show me this great honor that He has bestowed upon the twelve tribes and the apostles. He also showed me that we are named in this great city of God, even as we are named amongst the genealogy of Jesus because we are His seed. "He who overcomes, I will make him a pillar in the temple of My God, and he will not go out from it anymore; and I will write upon him the name of My God, and the name of the city of My God, the new Jerusalem (who we are), which comes down out of heaven from My God, and My new name" (Revelation 3:12 NAS). Remember that it is we the body and bride of Jesus that make up the city. We are made pillars in the temple, meaning that we are now a permanent part of the living structure for all to come to Jesus through.
"And he who talked with me had a gold reed to measure the city, its gates, and its wall. The city is laid out as a square; its length is as great as its breadth. And he measured the city with the reed: twelve thousand furlongs. Its length, breadth, and height are equal" Revelation 21:15-16 (NKJV).
Now remember that Paul prayed for us that we would, "Be able to comprehend with all the saints what is the breadth and length and height and depth" (Ephesians 3:18). God wants us to know these truths inherently in the book of Revelation, which has been given to us so that we might receive the fullness of Jesus. It is interesting to note that in Revelation 11, John was given a measuring reed to measure the temple (that we are), but he was told not to measure the outer court. In other words, it was not yet complete so don't spend your time there. But now in chapter 21, he is told to measure the whole city and to know that its length, breadth, and height are equal. The people who make up this city are now equal and are made complete in it; they are the finished product as prophesied Revelation 10:7. "But in the days of the voice of the seventh angel, when he is about to sound, then the mystery of God is finished, as He preached to His servants the prophets." They are now a finished temple and have been perfected by Him because they have come into the full likeness of Jesus. Remember, Paul wrote in Ephesians 4:13,15, "Until we all attain to the unity of the faith, and of the knowledge of the Son of God, to a mature man (body), to the measure of the stature which belongs to the fullness of Christ." -- "But speaking the truth in love, we are to grow up in all aspects into Him, who is the head, even Christ." These people are the body of Christ who have grown in love and are made equal on all sides, with no one person greater than the other. To be equal means, "identical in size, quantity, value, having the same privileges, rights, status, and opportunities as others, and being evenly balanced between opposing sides." The scriptures are very clear that we are joint-heirs with Jesus. This means that one will not do something without the other; they are equals! "And if children, then heirs -- heirs of God and joint heirs with Christ, if indeed we suffer with Him, that we may also be glorified together" (Romans 8:17 NKJV).
When this unification takes place, the body of Christ will have fulfilled the Lord's priestly prayer, "And the glory which Thou hast given Me I have given to them; that they may be one, just as We are one; I in them, and Thou in Me, that they may be perfected (complete) in unity, that the world may know that Thou didst send Me, and didst love them, even as Thou didst love Me" (John 17:22-23 NAS). When this takes place in its completeness, the body will have become one like the Godhead. Notice that the world, not the church, will stand up and take notice that God did send Jesus for them. It is through the sons of God ministry that the world will come to know Jesus!
THE TWELVE APOSTLES AS OUR FOUNDATIONS
And the wall of the city had twelve foundation stones, and on them were the twelve names of the twelve apostles of the Lamb. Rev 21:14(NAS)
We must have these twelve foundational stones as our attributes in our life if we want to make up the walls of the city of our God. In the meaning of their names are the attributes of Jesus that we must have in us if we are to carry the name of our God and His city. (See Rev. 3:12).
THE TWELVE NAMED GATES
It had a great and high wall, with twelve gates, and at the gates twelve angels; and names were written on them, which are those of the twelve tribes of the sons of Israel. Rev 21:12 (NAS)
And you shall mount on it four rows of stones; the first row shall be a row of ruby, topaz and emerald; and the second row a turquoise, a sapphire and a diamond; and the third row a jacinth, an agate and an amethyst; and the fourth row a beryl and an onyx and a jasper; they shall be set in gold filigree. And the stones shall be according to the names of the sons of Israel: twelve, according to their names; they shall be like the engravings of a seal, each according to his name for the twelve tribes. Ex 28:17-22 (NAS)
We also must have these twelve tribe attributes in our life if we are to enter through the gates of the city.
Reuben = "See a son" Ruby Stone
The overcoming Church is Godís son through the blood of the Lamb. "He who overcomes shall inherit these things, and I will be his God and he will be My son" (Revelation 21:7).
Simeon = "Hearing" Sapphire Stone
"My sheep hear My voice, and I know them, and they follow Me" (John 10:27).
Levi = "Unity" Emerald Stone
"Behold, how good and how pleasant it is For brothers to dwell together in unity" (Psalms 133:1).
Judah = "Praise" Sardius Stone
"I will bless the LORD at all times; His praise shall continually be in my mouth" (Psalms 34:1).
Issachar = "Reward" Sardonyx Stone
"After these things the word of the LORD came unto Abram in a vision, saying, Fear not, Abram: I am thy shield, and thy exceeding great reward" (Genesis 15:1 KJV).
Zebulun = "Habitation" The diamond
We are the dwelling place of God.
"In whom ye also are builded together for an habitation of God through the Spirit" (Ephesians 2:22 KJV).
Gad = "To overcome" Jasper Stone = Jesus our great overcomer
Asher = "Happy" Beryl Stone
"Then on the twenty-third day of the seventh month he sent the people to their tents, rejoicing and happy of heart because of the goodness that the LORD had shown to David and to Solomon and to His people Israel" (2 Chronicles 7:10).
Naphtali = "Wrestling" Peridot stone
"For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places" (Ephesians 6:12 KJV).
Manasseh = "God causes me to forget all my sufferings." Jacinth Stone
"And Joseph named the first-born Manasseh, "For, he said,"` "God has made me forget all my trouble and all my father's household" (Genesis 41:51).
Joseph = "Add a son" Onyx stone
Jesus is the first born Son and we are added in with Him.
"And she called his name Joseph; and said, The LORD shall add to me another son" (Genesis 30:24 KJV).
Benjamin = "Son of my right hand" Amethyst stone
"And it came to pass, as her soul was in departing, (for she died) that she called his name Benoni: but his father called him Benjamin" (Genesis 35:18 KJV).
Yes, each one of us is to have these characteristics as an overcoming Christian if we want to be sealed with His name.
CUT FROM THE SAME ROCK
Listen to me, all you who are serious about right living and committed to seeking God. Ponder the rock from which you were cut, the quarry from which you were dug. Isa 51:1 (Message Bible)
We the church are a chip off the same rock that Jesus is from, which is the Spirit of our Father that is eternal and can never pass away. He is over joyed to call us His brethren, family, and friend because that is who we are, we have His same Spirit living and abiding in us as He is in Jesus. If the foundation of the city is a living stone, then so are we made of same materials! Just as our human bodies are made as one, so will the body of Jesus be made one in Him. "Therefore everyone who hears these words of Mine, and acts upon them, may be compared to a wise man, who built his house upon the rock. "And the rain descended, and the floods came, and the winds blew, and burst against that house; and yet it did not fall, for it had been founded upon the rock. Matt 7:24-26 (NAS). Safety and security are only found in God as we have built our lives upon the truth of His word. The words of Jesus are the solid rock that our lives should be built upon, but God also gave the prophets and the apostleís the other eleven foundational truths that we are to build the kingdom of God higher in our lives. They only gave us the foundation, the foundation is not the building, it has got to go higher and higher until it fills the universe and all that the Father has made for us to rule over throughout eternity. The kingdom will be built with one living stone upon the other until the entire earth is a part of the kingdom. We have to build it, God will help as He did the apostles but He will not do it for us. We must find our place in the kingdom and build our lives in obedience unto the glory of our God.
And I also say to you that you are Peter, and upon this rock I will build My church; and the gates of Hades shall not overpower it. Matt 16:18 (NAS)
We are to be built upon the truth that Jesus is the Christ, He is salvation, the [WALL] of deliverance, protection, and provision. This was the great revelation that Peter received from the Father, Peterís name means the [ROCK]. We also must become liken unto him the foundation for us to build upward and become the wall of salvation for all nations to be received into it; this is our quest to live in the power of the overcoming church.
